AFFOA is excited to announce the launch of Technical Working Groups on topics related to e-textiles and smart fabrics. A Technical Working Group (TWG) is a team made up of AFFOA member organizations and strategic government partners that provide vision for AFFOA’s future development directions. An important output of the TWGs is a series of technical roadmaps that aim to focus funding opportunities and development priorities.

Each TWG is led by a team from academia, industry and US government, and we are now looking for members to join as participants in each group. Below are high level descriptions of the four e-textile TWGs have been established:

  1. Flexible Power & Data: Integration of distributed elements (electronic and textile) within a soft system to support communications and power transmission.
Leaders: Alper Bozkurt (NC State), Jim Owens (Nautilus Defense), Stephen Kim (US Army NSRDC)
  2. Functional Fibers & Fabrics: Increase functionality of fiber including both IC insertion and continuous function fiber along with the advancement of functional fabrics including sensing and haptics.
Leaders: Alexander Gumennik (Indiana Univ.), Matt Trexler (Under Armour), Chris Tabor (AFRL)
  3. Soft System Integration: Wearable and non-wearable system integration elements such as connectors, antennas and interface devices.
Leaders: Lucy Dunne (Univ. of Minnesota), Adam Whiton (Flex), Regina Shia (AFRL)
  4. Industry Infrastructure: Building blocks of an industry including reliability testing, materials database, PDK/ supported device development and modeling.
Leaders: Genevieve Dion (Drexel Univ.), Diana Wagner (99 Degrees), Chris Jorgeson (IPC), Kate Young (US Army DEVCOM)

In order to introduce our TWGs and provide additional information on process, expectations, and the upcoming FlashStarts Event, AFFOA will be holding an informational webinar on May 12th from 1-2PM EST.
